Real Madrid vs Manchester United

After 90 minutes the score was tied 1-1 and what came after was a sight for sore eyes, but United still came out victorious and took 2 of the 3 points on offer.

The first half was started well by Manchester United with the reds being the better side. But as the half progressed, Real Madrid slowly started feeling their way into the game and looked the dominant team and most likely to break the deadlock. United were finding it hard to break down the Madrid defence and midfield until the young Frenchman, Antony Martial stepped up to show that it wasn't impossible...

The entire attacking move was started by Fellaini who's perseverance proved to be vital as he played the ball to Anthony Martial. Driving at the Madrid defence with immense speed and agility, Martial managed to dribble his way through, leaving the defenders for dust. He played the ball to Jesse Lingard who was left with a tap-in to put the Red Devils ahead in the fixture, a brilliant way to end the first half.

The second half was pretty boring to be honest, with United creating barely any chances and being really poor in their finishing. In the 68th minute our new signing, Victor Lindelof fouled Hernandez in the box and gave away a penalty. Casemiro scored from the spot to bring Madrid level.

The game ended up being decided on penalties and I'm not too sure what to say. I honestly think that it was the worst penalty shootout I've ever seen in my life. Out of 10 penalties, only 3 ended up in the back of the net (missed by Martial, McTominay and Lindelof for United and scored by Mkhitaryan and Blind).

Overall the performance by the reds was not good enough. The second half team fielded by Madrid entailed players from their B team and U19s and yet our first team with all our big players (Pogba, Lukaku, Martial and Mkhitaryan) lost 1-0 to them. Although we won, we should be disappointed with the performances out there and Real Madrid were just as bad! When hearing that United were going to play Real Madrid everyone was expecting a thrilling contest, but what we got was quite the opposite.

Nonetheless, a win in the penalty shootout means that we take two points from the game and will hope to add another 3 to our 5 when we face Barcelona at 00:30 on Thursday morning BST. Let's hope that this game DOES live up to its high expectations and we ARE in for a good match.

Centre Back Options for Manchester United

As Sir Alex Ferguson said "Attack wins you games, defence wins you titles" and for Manchester United to be challenging for titles again, we need a flawless backline. We need a defence that'll do the job 35 out of 38 times a season. With games coming thick and fast as the season progresses we'll need serious reinforcements especially with Phil Jones and Eric Bailly being very injury prone, we'll need to consider signing a new centre back. We could, of course, look at the academy and give Axel Tuanzebe chances but if there's a long term injury to either one of Victor Lindelof or Harry Maguire, it'll be far too much pressure on Axel to expect him to play 90 min games in that duration which is why we'll have to look to the transfer window. Academy Watch: Teden Mengi

Over the years, Manchester United have become known for outsourcing when it comes to the centre-back position. Just look at the likes of Jaap Stam, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in the past, or Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly more recently. It is a tough position to break through in as a youth at the club.

But, with that said, following the acquisition of the aforementioned Maguire, now club captain, the next two candidates to potentially make some noise at the heart of United's defence are both academy products. Axel Tuanzebe is the obvious one. The one that is dubbed as perhaps one day the future captain. Teden Mengi, the 18-year-old prospect and the focus of this weeks article, is the other.

Manchester United has had some fantastic players over the years and have won trophies and the hearts of the Old Trafford faithful during their time at the club. However, after they depart the club some players flourish just as much and sometimes even more. This is the ultimate former-Red XI that are still playing and for this lineup, I'll do a 4-4-2 formation.

Not many good options out there really but Ben Foster at 37 is still performing exceptionally for Watford and despite their poor defensive record he has been outstanding this season and has been so since joining the Hornets. He may not have had the best time at Old Trafford but is certainly the best of the bunch of ex-United 'keepers.

Patrice Evra reveals Ronaldo's promise to rejoin United

During Manchester United's official podcast, UTD Podcast, Patrice Evra revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo had told him he would rejoin Manchester United in 2013 before Sir Alex announced his retirement.

Evra recalled on the podcast: “He...said: ‘My target is I’m 99 per cent sure we will have Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale. I just need these two players to win the Champions League again. Ninety-nine per cent.’, and to be fair, when I speak with Cristiano, I ask him and he said yes to the boss, and was coming to join United. He told me this.”

However, Cristiano Ronaldo did not join as Sir Alex announced his retirement and neither did Gareth Bale who instead joined Ronaldo at Real Madrid for a world record fee of £85m at the time and won 13 trophies with Ronaldo during their time together.

Angel Gomes made his first ever senior appearance for Manchester United coming on for Wayne Rooney in the final league match of the 2016/17 season in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, becoming the youngest ever player to play for Manchester United in the Premier League.
