Newcastle United vs Manchester United Match Analysis

Manchester United have just lost 1-0 to Newcastle at St. James' Park to take this season from finished to completely finished. Matt Ritchie scored the only goal of the game to assure that the Magpies got all three points. This loss means that Manchester United are now 16 points off league leaders, Manchester City.

Something even more disheartening is that if Man City go on to win the next five games, he will have to bear the hardship of giving them the guard of honour. And with the way things are going, them losing a game seems extremely unlikely. Giving Pep and Manchester City a guard of honour is literally the last thing I want to be doing.

Coming to the game, what an absolutely shocking performance by the players. Extremely sloppy and unconvincing passes marred the game complemented by some horrible finishing. Starting from the back, De Gea was his usual self, but all of the back 4 are to blame. Smalling shouldn't be anywhere near the first team after this performance. I have no clue why Luke Shaw isn't starting over Young who is clearly struggling. Jones did not do too bad for himself but he seems more shaky with Smalling as his partner at the back. Valencia didn't do too bad either but we need to start looking for a replacement.

In midfield, Pogba looked like he was injured. Anyway, he was partly culpable for the goal that we conceded. Upfront, Sanchez was the only player who was trying and creating windows of opportunities only to be let down by the other forwards. Martial was extremely poor and didn't seem to be bothered, missing chance after chance.

He has been out of form for a while and I hope Rashford returns to full fitness soon. Another player we are missing a lot is our very own, Eric Bailly. A centre back partnership of him and Jones or Lindelof should be deployed at the earliest. In my opinion, Lindelof should be starting ahead of Smalling but it seems as though Jose is saving him for the Champions League.

Moving on, we have the FA Cup 5th round next weekend and we can most certainly not take this attitude and tactics to Huddersfield. Today they just beat Bournemouth 4-1 at home so are more than capable of finding the back of the net. It was just last week when we beat them 2-0, but we cannot forget the fixture earlier in the season where we lost our first game of the season.

Pogba will be key in breaking them down, as long as he doesn't turn in today's performance again. So, this result means that Jose is still without a win away at Newcastle, we are miles behind the Manchester City side and most probably will end the season without a trophy. Onto Huddersfield!
