Newcastle United vs Manchester United Player Ratings

Jose Mourinho's squad seemed to turn things around with a nice and tidy victory against Huddersfield last time out, but against Newcastle, things went right back to the drawing board.  United turned in an awful performance that landed them on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline. Here is how they played individually.

Formation: 4-2-3-1
Ineffective all match long.  Constantly forced wide, no space in the attacking box.

Goal Keeper: David de Gea - 6

Wasn't at fault for the goal as the attacker was in acres of space, and his distribution was fine all match.  A standard performance for the keeper.

Left Back: Ashley Young - 4

Did not provide anything in attack and was relatively obscure.  He did try to provide vocal leadership, but ultimately it appeared the rest of his backline didn't listen - Luke Shaw please.

Right back: Antonio Valencia - 5

Valencia tried to affect the game going forward.  Not great , not bad.  A fairly average performance.

Centre Back - Phil Jones - 5

Provided one key block, but seemed at least partially at fault for the Newcastle goal.  He wasn't marking anyone in the box.

Centre Back - Chris Smalling - 2

God awful.  This player should only see time in FA Cup and League Cup ties and Champions League group stages once advancement is secure. Amazingly, did not win a single tackle the entire match.  Borderline impossible.  Possibly the worst performance he has ever had in a United shirt.

Defensive Mid - Nemanja Matic - 6

He was solid, ultimately subbed off.

Defensive Mid - Pogba - 4

He doesn't seem happy at the back of the midfield.  He also did not look fully match fit.  He looked angry on the sidelines when he was subbed off.  This looks like a budding problem and fodder for the anti-Mourinho faction.

Right Attacking Mid - Martial - 5.5

Looked a bit more comfortable in his role.  Should have scored, but was denied by a good save.

Centre Attacking Mid - Jesse Lingard - 5

Hard runs all match, had a moment with Mourinho, but looks to be the man in the middle for United for at least the rest of this season.  The astonishing goals however, seem to be a thing of the past.

Left Attacking Mid - Alexis - 5

Ran hard all match, good on the ball, but a shocking miss cost United dearly.

Forward - Lukaku - 5

One good through ball, one good aerial duel; other than that, invisible.  Not all his fault.  He has no space in the box.

Carrick (for Pogba) 66th minute - 6

Calmed things down when he subbed for Pogba.  Provided some leadership on the pitch.

Mata (for Lingard) 66th minute - 5

Pretty invisible.

McTominay (for Matic) 77th minute - 5

Came in as the old Fellaini role attempting to find a header late, didn't affect the game nor outcome.
