OPINION: What is Manchester United’s best midfield combination?

It’s five out of five now for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager and all of sudden the good times are back at the club. The goals have been flying in at the top end of the pitch, but it's been the performances of some our midfielders that have been catching the eye of everyone.

Paul Pogba has looked a different player since the start of Solskjaer’s reign and he had eight goal involvements in the Norwegian’s first four games. Nemanja Matic has changed his game and has been passing the ball forward more and a lot quicker than he ever has in a United shirt. Ander Herrera has been putting in his usual professional, solid performances and is reportedly happier than he’s ever been at the club and is ready to sign a new deal.

Although Ole has seemingly preferred the midfield combination of Pogba, Matic and Herrera he has given opportunities to all of the midfielders at the club and it would be fair to say that some have taken their chances and others haven’t. With four months of the season to go does the gaffer know what United’s best midfield combination is?

In this weeks opinion column our writers give their thoughts on what they think United’s midfield should look like…

I think it’s obvious that Pogba and Matic have dramatically improved this season since Solskjaer has come in and when playing forward they create from defence to attack almost with ease. Many fans have been screaming for Fred or Pereira to come into the midfield but honesty neither have fully adapted to Premier League football yet; as they don’t release their passes quick enough and did get pressured and outmuscled against Reading and have done so in the league when they played. Ander Herrera has been so consistent and energetic in midfield, why would anyone else come in? He wins the ball high up and starts attacks just as much as Matic and although he was brought in as an attacking midfielder in 2014 he’s changed his position slightly and it’s meant he has excelled over the last three years and a new contract is only fair for the Spaniard. So my choice is to keep the midfield as it is with Pogba, Herrera and Matic until Fred has gotten used to the league’s physicality.

Pogba – Matic – Herrera. Enough said.

Let’s start off with everyone’s favourite player at United at the moment. Yep you guessed it right, it is Ander Herrera. He covers every blade of grass and always gives it his all whenever he plays. Criminally underused during the LVG era, when he plays our team just seems to gel so much better. From intercepting forward passes to delaying opposition transitions by fouling opponents. He knows how to boil the piss and many a fan love him. A true United player. Always fights for the badge.
Next is Nemanja Matic. He is our default CDM and although some of his pace may have left him, he is still our defensive shield that covers the defence.

Finally there’s Paul Labile Pogba. What more can I say. He can shoot he can pass and he can dribble. A World Talent if I do say so myself. He has the touch of an angel and the vision of a hawk. It’s a bit sad that it took the sacking of Mourinho to finally “Unlock him”, but say what you will. With him in the side our team performs better. The midfield combo of Pogba, Matic and Herrera not only has the creativity to provide our attacking force with assists, but it also has the defensive onus to protect our often times shaky backline.
