Tottenham Hotspurs vs Manchester United Player Ratings

After a mentally draining late night kick off at Wembley, we saw ourselves lose 2-0 to a very astutely set up Tottenham Hotspurs. Their set up in terms of stopping us, was reminiscent of ours when we beat Chelsea at Old Trafford last season. Anyway, coming back to our own team and players. It is going to be extremely tough to give anyone a respectable rating because of how dire we were last night. I don't want to beat around the bush after that performance, so let's straight into the ratings.

David De Gea: 6/10
He wasn't at fault for either goal and also pulled off some saves to keep the scoreline down. He was probably the least culpable player as usual but we really need to avoid such performances because for the world class goalkeeper that he is, he doesn't deserve this.

Antonio Valencia: 5/10
He got turned inside out by Son but not as much as his wing back mate on the other flank. Again, the least culpable of the back four as both the goals and most of their attacking runs came from the left-hand side. But he wasn't effective going forward either. We never really dominated the right flank and he must share blame for that.

Chris Smalling: 2/10
One half of the chuckle brothers, had an absolutely poor game and Harry Kane gave him plenty to worry about. When you're against the best striker in the league, you have to bring your A game. On the contrary, Smalling gave him space and allowed him to take shots on goal. Lucky for him, De Gea saved his blushes.

Phil Jones: 1/10
The other chuckle brother was not as lucky. Everything that could go wrong for Jones, went wrong. While resiliently trying to score an equalizer, Jones scored an own goal while sticking his foot out trying to clear the ball. He had an absolute nightmare and Dele Alli made a mockery out of him throughout the game. He needs to put this behind him and pull up his socks!

Ashley Young: 2/10
To start with, I don't know why Luke Shaw didn't start. He has been amazing for us of late. Youngy gave Eriksen far too much space and was directly at fault for the first goal. All the Spurs attacks were either down the middle or the left flank. They knew that if they had a decent go at our defence, it can be got at.

Nemanja Matic: 3/10
At one point of the game, it looked as though Matic and Young were having a competition of who dispossessed better. He was extremely sloppy and looked far from the massive player that he has been for us. He was misplacing simple 5 yard passes and often gave the ball away cheaply.

Paul Pogba: 3/10
Paul Labile Pogba had an absolutely atrocious game and that caused us to lose the midfield completely. Pogba is our midfield general and without him, there is no attacking play. Ergo, him not turning up was where we lost the game. He played really useless and sloppy Hollywood passes upfront and no one seemed to get to the end of them!

Jesse Lingard: 3/10
Ligard had no impact on the game whatsoever. The only memory I have of him was getting the ball in midfield and running towards the Spurs goal, only to get beaten up by Vertonghen or Davinson Sanchez.

Alexis Sanchez: 4/10
Alexis was really trying to break down their backline but all in vain. He was constantly bullied by the Spurs defence. However, what I did like was that Sanchez contributed well defensively and often won the ball back. Unfortunately, he was dropping far to deep to try and get the ball. He should be pressing the back line, driving towards the goal. I really want him to do well at this club!

Anthony Martial: 4/10
Couldn't do much because of the lack of service. Occasionally made a decent run but it didn't amount to anything in the end. He did force a couple of good saves from Lloris but way more was expected from him.

Romelu Lukaku: 3/10
Much like every other attacker, even he was rendered useless by the Spurs backline and didn't contribute to anything. He fell victim to their offside trap on multiple occasions. Not good enough.

Marouane Fellaini: ?/10
Rating him would be unfair because he was thrown into an already dysfunctional system and then substituted off 7 minutes later due to an injury.

Juan Mata: 4/10
Did not influence the game at all after coming on.

Ander Herrera: 4/10
Again, we was brought on unexpectedly to replace Fellaini who had to be taken off a few minutes after we was brought on. He just added to the uselessness, that was our midfield.
