Southampton vs Manchester United Player Ratings

Injuries sustained in the home defeat to Crystal Palace forced Solskjaer to make changes to the starting eleven, with Young at fullback and Pereira on the wing. Mata was picked to play in the number 10 role, despite the gaffer's vote of confidence in Lingard after his dismal display against the Eagles.

Player Ratings

David de Gea: 7

Looked more assured than last week and denied Ings with a superb save moments before the Southampton equaliser.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 8

Another solid performance from the young full-back who is fully justifying his call-up to the England senior squad.

Harry Maguire: 7

We know he's good, but we won't see the best of Maguire until he has full trust in the man to his right.

Victor Lindelof: 3

Another poor attempt at a defensive header which led to a crucial goal. Clearly lacking in confidence, which is worrying. Chris Smalling's Manchester United career didn't end for this.

Ashley Young: 7

Slotted into the left-left back role with ease and supported Daniel James well. His vast experience and willingness to work more than compensated for his defensive shortcomings. Almost won the game late on with a great curling effort.

Paul Pogba: 3

When he's on it, there's nobody in the Premier League who comes close. Unfortunately, he was most definitely not on it this weekend. Gave the ball away too cheaply too often.

Scott McTominay: 7

Vastly improved performance after last week. Picked up Pogba's slack and provided much-needed support to the attackers.

Daniel James: 8

Going from strength to strength. Was tireless in attack, kept the Southampton defence busy all game and took his goal superbly. I don't care how he celebrates them, as long as he keeps scoring them. My Man of the Match.

Andreas Pereira: 2

If they handed out awards for poor performance Pereira's mantelpiece would be buckling. He clearly has the ability, it just doesn't come through consistently when it matters. Time is running out for the Brazilian to nail down a position in United's first-team squad.

Juan Mata: 6

Calm and assured on the ball, made some intelligent passes and proved to be effective in the final third. If only he had more pace.

Marcus Rashford: 2

Possibly his worst performance in a United shirt. Constantly chose the wrong option and failed to ask any questions of the Southampton defence.

Subs

Nemanja Matic: 4

Did nothing to improve his chances of making the starting XI when he replaced Mata.

Jesse Lingard: 4

Lively when he came on, selfishly took a shot when there were better options.

Mason Greenwood: 7

A bright spark in an otherwise dull performance. Given the lack of quality options up front, this lad surely deserves more game time.
