Analysis:

Sergio Romero has been at Manchester United for five years now and has been a great understudy for David De Gea when called upon. He has some of the best goalkeeping stats that would mean other clubs would probably have him as their number one. This season, Romero made 17 appearances mainly in the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup competitions, producing 6 clean sheets and only conceding 3 goals.

He was unfortunate not to have played in both the FA Cup and UEFA Europa League Semi Finals as Ole preferred David De Gea between the sticks despite the good form of Romero. You can argue that the bad performance from De Gea in the FA Cup against Chelsea and with hindsight, the number two goalkeeper should have been given the chance to play in this match.

Romero’s gave an interview to the United website back in July before the FA Cup Semi Final against Chelsea discussing that criticism is a reality for keepers as he said, “the reality is that if we look at all 11 players on the field, the only one out of these that might get criticism is the goalkeeper. After that, all the rest can get on with their jobs and they’ll hardly ever get any criticism.

They’d have to really stand out to ever be criticised. On the other hand, with us, one mistake can cost us a goal which could lose us the game. But that’s what we were born for, to be goalkeepers, to give of our best and to overcome every situation.

Romero’s best attributes is that he is a great shot stopping (reflexes), saving close range shots and penalty saving. Romero has been a great safe pair of hands between the sticks and it has just been unfortunate that we have a world class goalkeeper in De Gea though his form has been questionable at times last season.

Overall – 7/10

Ambitions for next season:

It is interesting to see what will happen with Sergio Romero as he enters the final year of contract. With Dean Henderson having returned from his loan spell at Sheffield United, he has indicated he wants to be the number one goalkeeper at United, wanting to unseat De Gea from the position. It all depends whether Henderson goes out on loan again as to whether Romero remains the No.2 goalkeeper.

It has been rumoured that Romero might be used as a make weight in the deal for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and newly promoted Leeds are said to be interested as well. With four goalkeepers in De Gea, Henderson, Romero and Grant, a decision will need to be made on who stays and goes. If Romero is sold, he has been a great servant to the club and will be remembered for helping us to win the UEFA Europa League back in 2017.
